SQL Server was not fully compatible with VISTA until SP2. See following link:

According to SQL Server Books online, named pipes are enabled for Local connections. This should have been specified in the list of protocol types.

Try right clicking on the individual error log and then selecting View Error Logs from the pop-up menu.
