Alternatively you can create a backup job in the server1 and appropriate notification to operator and the you can invoke the job from any server where sqlcmd is installed

is your AV locking the file or there is some vm stuff taking a snapshot of the disk and freezing the i/o for some time.

i can connect from SQL 2000 QA to a SQL 2008 instance with out any issue. From enterprise manager you cannot connect to SQL 2005 or 2008

You can alternatively use BCP to export the data , Zip it (7za is free and also run from command line)

then using ftp you can copy to destination , unzip...
