The issue is not related with VPN. It is with authentication. so. try with a trusted connection string attribute.

Try these steps.
1. Connect sepcifying Ip adress and port.
eg. 192.168.1.10,1207
2. Check firewall is blocking the port.. if so give exceptions for that port in firewall settiongs. and start sql srvice...

check firewall setting...and put it off and try..
also.. check the SS in branch computer for mixed mode authentication
once you change the authentication type restart the computer.
