I have answered my own question.

To install 2005 client I had to put xp sp2 on which included the firewall default of being turned on.

I don't know how to fix it long term but you can select view, large icons and then switch back to task pad.

Could you expand the question a little?

If you mean the maximum number then sql 2000 is limited to 16 instances.  Each is licensed individually.
