This is a pretty good book with all the basics.
Also, for SQL specific Data Mining for SQL Server 2005 (although I believe that the 2008 edition is out)....

It sounds like the OP is using Access to generate the reports not MYSQL. Access won't let you do multiple unions.

Power Pivot is an Excel add-in. It does not require SQL or Sharepoint to deploy. It can connect to any datasource.
