What events and columns you selected while running the Profiler to capture the T-sql that causing the tempdb growth?
did you use server side trace? or Profiler GUI?

You have a process that caused your tempdb to grow to a certain size. Once that process finished, the pages became free. Once a file grows, it will not shrink...
