    That works OK for tiny databases. Over a couple hundred MB, that generally crashes Management Studio.

    Ok thats a TIP....

    You could, but why would you want to? Restoring a backup's going to be faster and less work.

    just restore the 2008 R2 database to the 2012 instance and the database engine will upgrade the database for you.

    Have you check Windows Event Log if there is any clue? (There rarely is, but...)

    Please confirm that you used SQL Server Configuration Manager to set the service account.
