it is interesting. it is possible to parse the event log from tsql as well.

Could someone answer the question how did you know the rpc call timeout (without completing) based on the trace?

Not sure what did you mean "what edition of database should you have".
Databases do not have edition. sql server may have edition.

we had .net 2.0 sp1 and sql sql sp2 installed.

Some articles mentioned to re-install .net 2.0 framework, but I did not try it yet since if so I can live without SSMS on it.
