Unfortunelty I have never used BizTalk. Before looking into this I would revisit log shipping and find out why they ruled it out. I have learnt from experience...

Because they have the ability to insert as well as read you need to notify them to point at the new server but you also need to DTS the files...

Performance will be fine.
If all you want is to audit Logon failure and success then this is the best way.
If you want more then you need to start looking...

How to backup registrations
browse to this reg key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\SQLEW\Registered Servers X]
Export this regkey and you can get your registered servers back without the work.
