If you use DTS you can shape (transform) the data. When the dts package runs it can then clean any hidden characters or at least tell you what lines...

As a suggestion you could connect Access 2000 and use a wizard.

No replication is in use.
The jobs scheduled to run do not appear to be the cause as no one job has been running at all...

I know this may be stating the obvious but check the current SQL Errorlog to see if there is a message like:
SuperSocket Info: Bind failed on TCP port 1433.
If so...

Try:
EXEC master.dbo.xp_enumgroups
-- To see groups and descriptions (Local I think)
and:
Exec master.dbo.xp_ntsec_enumdomains
-- To see domains
Also check out the 'net user' comand line function.

I move the errorlog to be on the same RAID set as the database backups so I can copy to tape in one job.

Sometimes the SQL Agent doesn't restart because it checks the status of the MSSQLServer service and it may not have started when it makes its attempt to start.

Also check your errorlog to see if the TCP port is bound when SQL last started.
