i have faced this type of problem....deleted old maintenance plan and create new maintenance plan....
now its working properly fine....

on local machine create shared folder with full permissions..
on remote server take backup
example
backup database model to disk ='\\localmachinename\shared_foldername\model.bak'

Its depends on companies environment,There are many servers and many databases in my company we are using sap as front end and database size is around 10GB and connectivity...

i use sp_lock then find the spid associated with concerned DB...
i kill that Spid.......
