Just in case anyone is interested I did find a solution. You have to specify the result set which is new to SQL 2012. The error with the stored procedure...

Sorry about that - my bad.
The original settings in the file were
NamedSetShallowExistsMode
AxisSetShallowExistsMode
- both were set to 0 and we changed both to 1
and restarted the SSAS service for it...

I checked with the users and apparently none of the measures in the query are calculated measures. I have tried a few things with the non_empty_behavior property but unsuccessfully....
