Did you add a new step for the job with xp_sendmail and the required parameters. i.e when the job fails it would go that step and execute the same.

Are you referring to SQL server 2000 or SQL server 2005.
If you are using SQL server 2005, I would suggest you to use database mail feature instead which is lot...
