Apparently there were some missing files in installation folder due to some virus cleaning process previously.
We downloaded the installation media and tried again. It worked.

we may upgrade some of our installations to 2016. we have 3 replicas and we would want to upgrade them with minimum downtime. if it works...

i mentioned in my earlier post that there is no file left in the file group. to be perfectly sure, i ran the script you posted. it returns 0 rows....

if they use (ApplicationIntent=ReadOnly) in their connection string when they pull the data, you don't need to do anything else. lways on take cares of the rest. but of course...

firstly, this is a shame for microsoft. they have new feature but their own product does not support it 100%.
anyway, at the beginning i tried the same way mentioned above...
