the SQL server agent is using a domain account which has rights to the relevant network area I've confirmed access by mapping a drive from the server to this area...

If I write the results from SQLCMD -L to a text file then write a batch file to query the top...

open cmd and runsqlcmd -L
if you want output of this in text file, lets say in c drive then :-
sqlcmd -L >c:\serverlist.txt
