I had to create a separate maintenance plan and the suffix was also wrong ... apparently it's a bug in sql 2005.
Now it works

I even created a new plan and executed it manually and the files do not get deleted.

This is what I have for the maintenance cleanup of the transaction log backup plan
EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file 0,N''E:\backups\tkcsdb\logs'',N''.trn'',N''2008-08-27T13:00:01''
I see older files in the directory that are supposed to be gone 🙁

I see it as part of a maintenance plan in the history log ( log file viewer) but nothing else.

Actually I did add later after the pans were created and the green links are there

This is a new sql 2005 install and I have indeed added the task to the maintenance plan and created that link but old files specified are still there as...

I verified the TLOG backups and they are done every hour. The log file is relatively small ( 800 mB ) after the backup, but then at any given time...
