I'm not entirely sure, but I think even members of "Power Users" (OS role) can stop services. Administrators will for sure.

Maybe somebody needs to offer 3rd party support for software that companies retire. NT is an example of that could be supported by 3rd party for price.

If it is happening at "regular" intervals it may be easy to catch with Profiler. Otherwise you may need to setup a trace and let it run for a while. ...

I would approach it as QPR has suggested. And then you can create an operator and the alert's response would be to email them. Check out Alerts in BOL.

Thanks folks. We will be moving to SQL 2000 as well. Unfortunately the vendor application doesn't have any new optimizations as Jo had mentioned.
