I applied SQL 2005 hotfix pack 3 which brought the Version number to 9.0.3186. The hotfix cured the problem described in the first post.

Yes. This problem involved several maintenance plans, same problem on all of them. I did find that the problem did not occur when setting up the plan for multiple databases...
