Check the Upgrade-List table in this link https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393(v=sql.120).aspx
I'd also skip in-place upgrade and do it with a new installation of SQL Server 2104.

Nowhere in the question is stated that the SSMS is 2016 version. "Compare Showplan" is not available in the lower versions.

Unfortunately 2016 isn't currently an option, licences have been bought for 2014
Licenses for what: Standard or Enterprise? Because it's very different in price.
My advice is to start with Standard....

If you install SQL Server 2016 then you'd be much better. The Standard is very close to Enterprise. Find them here https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc645993.aspx

No, you don't need a Full backup every day.
Example:
Full backup once per week
Diff backup: once per day (or more times, it's up to you)
