Yes, I think so since each instance has its own set of binarys plus it would be a mess otherwise if you have for example SQL 7 and 2k installed...

For file defragmentation, I heard indeed that Diskeep does a good job been able to defrag files in use and base on a schedule, never use it though.

You might want to look at DoubleTake, it claim to do real time syncronization.

We are using Trend Micro. Never had any issue with databases getting corrupted.

When you choose between Replication and Logshipping I think someone should consider the fact that with Replication the database corruption isn't propagated, just sql statements are, but with Log Shipping...
