I would urge anyone who encounters a similar issue to read Paul Randal's blog (http://sqlskills.com/blogs/paul/) as the likelyhood is that the database will be in an inconsistent state....

Yep, totally agree Steve...if you can consolidate, virtualise, etc. (though each of these brings their own issues and considerations for performance, availability, etc.), hence my caveat of '...all the stuff...
