Hi Dave in order for domain group/users to get access they will need to have appropriate permissions to the sqlserver.

I used the alter database but now I cannot apply any logs or diffs to the database.

To bring the standby database out of read only execute the following
restore database <<database name>> with RECOVERY

If you are doing this on a regular basis.
Invest in Litespeed.
Biggest database we have is about 30 gig.
With litespeed the backup is 3gig.
