It depends, if the replication technology sync's accounts...etc then Database. if not Server level.

Sounds like bad stripes on the drives. This is very bad as your database may become suspect or corrupt! Run a Chkdsk /F /R , make sure SQL is shut...

I also have a 45GB database that is backed up with a IBM 40/80 DLT using RAID 5 on 10 Drives. It takes 1Hr 40min to complete a full backup...

SQL 2000 Resource Kit has a Simple log shipping version that can be installed on Standard addition.
