I find PowerQuery handy. It's an Excel add-in from Microsoft. It can read SQL Server, SharePoint, flat files, web services, even FaceBook.

It's also easier to put invalid data in a denormalized database or one that lacks proper declarative referential integrity.

In SQL 2008 I right click the database name in Object Explorer, select Reports / Standard Report / Disk Usage by Table.
