• Description: A Chemical Synapse is a type of biological synapse where communication between neurons occurs through the release and detection of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. When an action potential (an electrical signal) reaches the end of a presynaptic neuron, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, a small gap between the presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons. These neurotransmitters then bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, causing a change in its membrane potential and potentially triggering another action potential.
