I would probably go RAID 10, mirroring and striping. You get the redundancy and a performance boost. A lot depends on the controller though..

What user is SQL running as? Is this a local user? A system user? A Domain user?

My recommendation is to never do backups locally, always to a file server.

No, backup history allows you to more simply restore backups. Which you can do without backup history it just takes longer.
