personally, I've founds SQLMail flaky, and troubleshooting disrupts my sleep hours, just like the limitations in the FTP commands in DTS. 

I tend to use other free smtp commandline programs...

also note that the ftp feature does not nativly support directory transversal as it seems it is a limited feature set for the ftp service.
