I have read about some issues such as running twice as long after SP4 has been applied. We are currently running SP3a. Are you SP4 yet?

Do you notice, over time, any degradation? I believe the defrag only reorgs the pages that are not intertwined with other indexes.

When you did the initial full restore, did you specify the NORECOVERY option?

The only other thing to look at is constraints. You may need to disable/enable when trying to restore the data to the table.

I would check with the vendor, as the application may not let you change it. If the application is doing bcp or something similar, it may not let you run...

I believe when you renamed this SP to "dbo.proc1_bak' Sql Server added the SCHEMA identifier of DBO to the beginning of the name you keyed in, thus giving you 'dbo.dbo.proc1_bak'....

You can tell by running select @@version in query analyzer from the master database in the instance in question. If the output is 2000.80.760 or higher, then you SP3 applied.

Have you tried reinstalling the Client Tools? Also, are you using the standard SQL Server port number? If not, that could be part of the problem.
