Have to say we did have seemingly random errors on backups when backing up to a network drive. After lots of searching we put them down to network blips!

You do need permissions to the folders, also, are you using the full UNC path for the folders?

Absolutely, I never use sa unless its a in case of emergency etc...
However I would necessarily use a service account for an owner, rather I was saying the Agent jobs...
