use two loops, one to go down the rows and one to go across the row finding spaces

as a work around, you can write a script task to copy over a blank spreadsheet to your connecting spreadsheet every time instead of clearing it down...

hmmm...struggling to spot it
you could see if there is an ldb on connection...
and the db or the workgroup file may be corrupted...so a compact/repair wouldn't hurt
(but i'm guessing!)
