You can also run a server side trace and filter on login, hostname, ip, Program_name. Run that for a week or so to give you a better idea.

You need to take up this problem with your email administrator. If you are using Exchange, you can send through a "smart host". That's what we do.

I would also suggest you monitor the counter : Page Life Expectency. This also gives you an indication of memory pressure.

I have found that the MS Press books by Itzik Ben-Gan to be very good. There are several for SQL 2008. Plus, a lot of resources right here on SSC.
