If there is any indication that the database will steadily grow (which i would assume a sharepoint database does, but have no actual experience) i would set the autogrow size...

But i had to give up after trying hard for a few days to downgrade from ent. eval to developer edition.

This may be irrelevant as i'm a novice in SQL.
But i assume you are using sql logins? are the servers set up for mixed mode authentication?
