Are we assuming that the date ranges in table B are non overlapping? if that is the case then soln above suffices, otherwise you will need another condition.

i would strongly recommend replication, looking at your requirement you don't want to mess about with them triggers

the only other way is to do the sorting in your application otherwise there is no other way to do it than by [if...else]or [select case]

Why not just get the 2005 Enterprise edition for a better developer experience and everything else that come with it.
