It's better to take the System Databases backup regularly ( it can be on daily basis or weekly), as it helps a lot in case of any disaster scenario.:-P

Did you checked the connectivity to database on that server using .udl file?

There are chances that someone from the Builtin\Administrator is present in SQL Server,which can login with an ID which is member of Administrators group and reset the SA password....
