Wrox has some good books. For sql 2005 there is a book for every part of it. db engine, SSIS, reporting services, etc.

in BOL there is a script to run to enable database mail for a user
as part of the process that updates that table you can have it run that script...

i use a cursor to build a bunch of update commands and dump them into a temp table to simulate the commands the distributor is sending.
