Hi Ed,
When i open the Run dialog and, type services.msc and click OK, it takes me to the SQL Server Configuration Manager , where it has the same..start,stop,pause,resume.... ...

Thanks..hmm when i go to add/remove programs i see microsoft sql server ....along with rest of programs on pc, don't see anywhere to uninstall an instance of server for db...

Thanks.. Exclude folders didn't work either. Now that I have SSMS up and running again will now reinstall antivirus program.

i uninstalled an antivirus program and it then worked.

ok success, apparently the window was so small i couldn't see the other file names, i removed those, resaved with *.bak, and it worked

Ok when i give the filename a extension like, myfilename.bak, i get the error message below:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The media loaded on "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Backup\MyFilename.bak" is formatted to support...

So I tried the Not In, but it returned null values, this is because the original data had hardcoded 'null'. so the workaround...

You're right Jeff modifying the registry is the best solution since you don't have data integrity issue then.
