  • RE: TempDB and SQL Error 845

Just wanted to give an update: All our server team did to resolve this problem was move the SAN to a new "cabinet" and the problem went away. ...

  • RE: TempDB and SQL Error 845

The problem is gone, but I don't know if the problem is fixed. The reason it's difficult to troubleshoot is that the error only occurs when one of our...

  • RE: TempDB and SQL Error 845

Yeah, it's on one of those situation where a lot has happened in a short amount of time...reorg, reloc, lay-offs, new vision, new roles, blah blah. Not making excuses,...

I'd be quite willing to bet that the problem will be back next month.

In a way, I hope you are right....even if only in the name of forward-progress.

  • RE: TempDB and SQL Error 845

Well, I'm guessing the problem has been resolved. Unfortunately, none of the recommendations I made were entertained. TempDB is still initialized to something less than 10MB with...

  • RE: TempDB and SQL Error 845

I didn't think I'd ever see a log file quadruple the size of the data file, especially in less than a 24-hour period. That's what shocked me. I've...

  • RE: TempDB and SQL Error 845

The physical server was put back online, the TempDB was 9MB by the time I checked it (not sure what the initialized size was). I ran one of the...

Did they say what RAID level? Or are we talking just 2 physical disks with no redundancy of any form?

    RAID 5.

BTW: I feel sheepish on this...

  • RE: TempDB and SQL Error 845

I talked with our server team and they said that J and P are essentially physical drives on the SAN dedicated to SQL Server (although they may have been keeping...

That's an understatement. With all the data files on one drive, all of the DBs are fighting over what's probably quite limited IO 'bandwidth'. Same with the logs.

    I need...

To add to what Jonathan has stated - find out if those LUN's are being presented from shared volumes. In other words, are the volumes (and disks)...

All of them? The heavily used and lightly used together?

    Where's TempDB?

With the exception of MASTER and MODEL, all DB data files, including TempDB, are on one drive (J). ...

  • RE: TempDB and SQL Error 845

What's the layout of databases on LUNs?

The MDFs are all on "J". The LDFs are all on "P"...for the most part. There is plenty of space...

  • RE: TempDB and SQL Error 845

I checked the timing of the last failed attempt of the job and found the following in the SQL Server Log:

A time-out occurred while waiting for buffer latch -- type...

  • RE: TempDB and SQL Error 845

Not sure if this helps, but....

The job history doesn't show anything useful....just a line similar to:

Executed as user: CABLE\!SrvSqlAgent. ...0.3042.00 for 32-bit Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1984-2005. All rights...
