To answer your question, we're getting an error 1314 when a non-sa user runs this stored proc with the xp_cmdshell statement..

I too support many vendor created databases and I also have a policy to never update the vendors objects or code. Even if it's a trigger.

Did you have any backups taken? If so, you may want to restore that backup file to another server, then run DBCCs to see if there was any corruption.
