Thanks for replies.
SQLSERVERAGENT was running.
Answer seemed to be to change database from simple to full and delete maintenance plans and create a new one.
Backups now working.

The General Tab does not have an enable box.
I dont have a schedule tab.
Some details are:-
Small Business Server 2003
SQL Enterprise Manager v8.
Database is GoldMine Sales & Marketing...

I have fixed this problem simply by copying the xpstar.dll file from the origianl installation cd to the program files\ms sql server\mssql\binn folder.
Worked fine and pretty simple.
