    I agree, but they didn't change the sql server exe in that release. The way to tell is to check the version on the netlibrary dll

    sqldiag writes its output into a file (the default it the sql logs directory)

    Take a read of the sqldiag Utility in books online.

    Have you tried running sqldiag.exe when the problem occurs to capture what is happening inside sql?

    If you get enough content in an area, you could specialise some of the newletters eg DBA, T-SQL, Security. Along the same sort of lines as the forums.
