Have you looked in the sql log to see if there is any more information?

You could create a sql scheduled task to run the job, then allow the users to run sp_start_job to start the job.

SysAdmins can change any password without having to know the old password
Securityadmin needs to know the old password to be able to change it, but they can setup new passwords.

You will need to install Service Pack 3/3a prior to installing MS03-31 (or any future security fixes!).
Microsoft generally only provide patchs for the latest service pack.

If you do not patch them against things like slammer for instance they could cause problems. SP3a disables the network librays and stops it listening on port 1434.

In my experience they hotfix checks the SP level and won't run if its not at the correct version.

I had the same exactly the same error on a sql server which was running CIM and IIS.
As soon as those services where shutdown it install went fine.

I've applied both the 7 and 2000 patchs to a few servers, and the version number was updated fine.

Yes you can change the port to any unused port.
You can do this using the 'Server Network Utility'. A restart of the SQL Server will be required.

The SQL 2000 patch changes the version number to 8.00.818
Has anyone installed the SQL7 SP4 patch yet?
If so can you let me know what the new version number for that...

From the Server, go into control panel ,then administration (if win2k), then servers. Find the sql server service and change the password there.
