True about the registry...
The easiest way I found was to two .REG files on logon, which restores the entries if they disapear.
The two point of interest are:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\SQLEW\UserRegistrationInfo =...

How are you obtaining this number?
Reason being, if you get it from the registry then there are a couple of places to look.
This location gives the original version:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer\CurrentVersion

I've not done this via SQL before, but whenever I try and run things like exe's or cmd's etc remotely I use PSEXEC.EXE.
