I was just pressing the 'user mapping' page - which would then bring up a listing of databases. So I wasn't running it on a particular db.

I get this same error. MS has one thread in msdn forums:

The MS poster says it's a bug - and also that it results from moving the msdb incorrectly...

You should change the table design if possible - it's got some problems as you can probably tell from having to write this query.

I think I was a little unclear.
We had the user domain\sam as the original owner. It was then changed to domain\sqlagent. We then deleted domain\sam. The job started getting errors complaining...
