If there's a perf counter for what you need to monitor you can create Windows Performance Counter monitor, and pick static threshold and go from there.

there already are monitors for db and log free space
DB Space Free (%) and MB
Transaction Log Space Free (%) and MB

Grant, could you polease clarify what you mean by "pointing the monitor at the rule"? When creating a unit monitor I don't see anything that looks like Rule based monitor....
