Other editions can read the compressed backup. It should work. Have you tried to restore ?

No preference with tempdb files per core ration, until we face tempdb bottleneck. Usually it would start with Latch waits for allocation contention.

Take a sql backup of system database. Try to restore them in another instance with different database name.
Then deattach and copy the mdf, ldf file.
But I did not test this....

If you have fixed port(other than 1433) and be able to hard code in apps, then sql browser is not necessary for this application.

You have some transaction which uses T log. I would suggest SQL TRACE to see how much WRITEs each batch is taking. So that we can see what is happening...
