I am not familiarized with OVM either, but pretty much is like VMware, but made by Oracle. Of course, hardware and system requirements are different.

Using compression or a software like RedGate will certainly help.
I would suggest using multiple backup files on large databases. That will reduce the IO stress and will help when exporting...

If you're going to be using Veritas Cluster Server or HP Polyserve instead of Windows Server Failover Cluster, then the process is somewhat more complicated.

Dropping my 2 cents here.
This may not be true for 2+ node Cluster, but I always try to put more RAM on server than the total amount of SQL instances...
