thanks for everyones tips.
It turned out to be an execution plan that was changing as a result of a index.
We now run this index script daily
ALTER INDEX ALL ON dbo.PS_CI_SP
REBUILD...

We are working with MS support. Support agrees that there is a problem with the memory and they are looking at our logs

We really never change any settings on the DB.

Today it is running quickly again. I believe that it is caching issue on the peoplesoft application server side.

The double new line was created by combining 3 text files. So instead of combining the 3 text files then doing 1...

my experience:
2 years+ of web developement in smaller companys
1 year as "Computer Operator" at large company, and then promoted to Associate DBA.
I don't think that a company will hire you off...
