If you have nothing in place currently, then backup size history is what you can go on to estimate space used... but this might not give you free disk space...

I don't think so- my understanding is that the methods described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307487 are the only ways to shrink tempdb.
The question is what causes the tempdb...

Most likely this is MS Search running as part of Full Text Search... I often see this on db servers hosting sharepoint databases.

Just to be clear- you should execute proc exp, do Find > Find Handle and enter "modellog.ldf" to ensure that some process is not locking the file.
