If you use SQL Report Server and the matrix format, it'll do it all for you.
Or you could use this SQL Pivot

We run SQL 2008 in VMware vSphere and it flies.
Things to consider...
- 64bit
- = or > 6 GB RAM depending on how hard it'll be hit, more RAM you have...
