I finally nailed it!
The problem turned out to be the login account used to run the MSSQLSERVER Service. I had the account for the agent service on both machines...

Initially I was trying to backup to a folder on the secondary server and it was failing.
Since changing to a folder local to the primary server the backup completes successfully...

He/She dint say that the "-" wont be pesent, right? The OP was concerned because of the fact that the length of the string before and after "-" is incosistent.....

I had the need of doing something similar but for different reasons.
It's not an ideal solution but perhaps you could tinker with it and see if you can make it...
